Knows Knows is a whimsically
illustrated, delightfully witty children's nonfiction book
series about an Australian sheepdog who was born deaf and
blind. Aptly named "Nose", and despite handicaps,
this little dog manages throughout life to weave her way into
the hearts of all whom she meets. Nose's couragous, silly
and sometimes unbelievable antics capture our imagination
as we ponder what her life must be like without sight or sound,
yet fully enjoying her world through an ultra powerful sense
of smell.
Charles Swan, children's author
and illustrator, was inspired by this special dog that his
family raised from a puppy. The Nose Knows books have been
used for more than 10 years in Spokane school districts APPLE
program. In the classroom, these books have helped children
discuss difficult subjects like death and sadness, love andjoy,
blindness, deafness, and other disabilities.
The ideas presented in the books
teach children about acceptance of those who are different.
Children and adults alike wonder how a deaf and blind dog
can get along in this world. "I hope my books will make
children wonder about just that," says Charles. "In
the classroom I've seen the Nose books open up rewarding
and exciting conversations about diversity."
The author has deliberately
kept the text handwritten and the drawings simple so that
young children can see possiblilities for their own creative
endeavors.

"Nose
was the smallest of her litter and at two months she
was found to be deaf and blind. Having a keen sense
of smell, the spunky pup could follow her mistress anywhere,
even keeping up during a run."
Nose
Knows is narrated by 7 year old Lizzie, seen here
